Building Modular Classrooms with GoodMFG®

An interior view of a Good Modular Structure, made up into a classroom

When the need for more instructional space collides with budgetary concerns and constraints, Good Modular Structures from GoodMFG offer clean, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and feasible modular classrooms that can be deployed in a matter of days, not weeks.

Portable buildings and structures are already a common solution for public schools, but traditional solutions come with many problems. Some solutions lack sufficient space for full class sizes. Some struggle with mold, mildew, and moisture.

Good Modular Structures offer an aesthetically pleasing, long-term alternative to “T-Buildings.”

Why Choose Modular at All?

Modular construction offers significant advantages over other solutions to classroom space constraints.

  • You get a semi-permanent or permanent structure designed for education. Trailers are great (we make them, we love them) but they’re not ever going to be big enough to provide students with sufficient space.
  • Any form of modular construction is going to offer deployment speeds that outpace traditional construction by a significant margin, allowing you to solve space problems fast.
  • Modular construction is significantly more cost-effective. You save on materials, project management overhead, and even on the temporary facilities you might need during construction. You also save on the headaches and stress associated with having an active construction site on your campus while you attempt to continue instruction—and of keeping students safe under those conditions.
  • Modular construction offers superior quality control. Modular units are built in controlled factory environments, leading to consistent product quality and reduced weather delays.

While you might not want to use modular construction to build an entire school from scratch, it’s perfect for adding program space, especially as overcrowding becomes more of a concern for your campus or district.

Good Modular Advantages

Good Modular Structures by GoodMFG are built to offer significant advantages to campuses and districts of every kind.

  • Superior materials and durability. Each structure is built with patent-pending composite aluminum panels. These are made from thick polystyrene foam sandwiched between sheets of #5052 aluminum. The aluminum itself is rust-resistant, impact-resistant, fire-resistant, and moisture-resistant. It’s lightweight yet exceptionally strong, and can last for decades. Yet it’s also a relatively inexpensive building material.
  • Insulation. The thick layer of polystyrene foam in our panels acts as a natural insulator, helping to provide interior comfort to teachers and students alike. HVAC systems may be added to provide additional comfort.
  • Health and safety protections for students and teachers. Many temporary buildings fall prey to mold and mildew very quickly. Good Modular Structures don’t leave any place for either one to grow, which improves interior air quality. All the materials are non-toxic and safe.
  • Aesthetics and integration. Each module is a sleek, silver, space aged building that looks like a modern, intentional addition to any campus. And while we don’t provide the service, it is possible to add vinyl wraps to these buildings that will help you add your school’s color or branding to the exterior.
  • Rapid deployment and minimal disruption. We can get these structures up and linked in a matter of hours (or days if you have a significant number of them). Avoid long construction lead times, and know that you’ll have your new program space up and ready to go before students arrive for their first day.
  • Inexpensive repairs. Our composite aluminum panels can withstand quite a bit of blunt force trauma without issue. But in the event that you do need a repair, the plug-and-play nature of our panels means you can replace a single wall for a couple of thousand dollars, instead of replacing the entire building or structure.

The stackable, linkable nature of our modular structures even offers some flexibility. You could create two stories worth of classrooms, maximizing your lot space. You can disassemble them and reassemble them in new configurations as the needs of your district change.

Example: Basic Classroom

Problem: Finding a cost-effective way to build a basic K-12 classroom.

Solution: 8 GM19HQ structures, linked.

Total Cost: $113,064 – $200,000.

Traditional Construction Cost: $303,300 to $505,500.

In Washington State, the average classroom size is around 900 square feet. The roomy interior of this set-up offers sufficient space for every student, as well as room for more modern classroom layouts that help address learning challenges such as flexible student seating and the adoption of multipurpose workstations.

Add-ons like floor-mounted outlets can offer technological readiness and power infrastructure for computers, tablets, lab equipment, and more.

You can add additional windows to bring natural light into the space. They’re also already equipped with soft 360° interior lighting that provides a nice alternative to the traditional harsh overhead fluorescent lighting that older classrooms still use.

Beyond the classroom

Good Modular Structures are well-suited to meet other campus and district needs as well. Ideas include:

  • Administrative offices. Create either temporary or permanent admin space so you can save building space for instruction.
  • Create libraries or media centers. Good Modular Structures are perfect for the creation of modern, quiet, well-lit libraries or multi-media study centers.
  • Science labs. Add workstations, counters, and cabinets to transform Good Modular Structures into powerful lab stations.
  • Cafeterias and breakrooms. Linked spaces can make expanding your cafeteria space easy and intuitive.
  • Temporary shelters. Work Good Modular Structures into your disaster or continuity planning and know that you’ll always have shelter space ready for any emergency.
  • Sports facilities & locker rooms. Good Modular Structures make excellent storage spaces and locker rooms for sports facilities.

They’re so flexible that you can virtually use them for anything. Certain add-ons can help you tailor each space to meet your unique needs.

Environmental Benefits

Are Good Modular Structures sustainable?

GoodMFG® believes in good environmental stewardship. That’s why our products are designed to:

  • Reduce waste. Factory-controlled construction leads to less material waste compared to on-site construction…and all of our aluminum scrap is recyclable. Long-lasting modular structures don’t need to be replaced very often, further contributing to sustainability. In fact, the composite aluminum panels we use to build your modular structures are capable of lasting for 50 years or more and will look the same decades later.
  • Energy efficiency. The composite aluminum panel design ensures it takes less power to heat or cool these structures than it would to heat or cool some competitor structures, or even some traditional buildings.
  • Reduced site impact. We reduce the carbon footprint by reducing the amount of time heavy machinery is rolling around on the job site. There’s also less to do. For example, there’s no need to dig into the terrain, which means Good Modular Structures require less gas and create less of a carbon footprint.
  • Little to no toxicity. Because we use composite aluminum panels, you don’t get the same release of tiny, toxic particles that you get when you cut into fiberglass—one of the more common competitor materials.

When you work with GoodMFG®, you can feel confident knowing we’re doing everything in our power to build products that are green, long-lasting, and student-safe.
