How do you end up with short term space problems?

Sometimes a space problem is permanent. Often, it isn’t.

A seasonal inventory increase, facility renovation, new project, temporary staffing change, or unexpected delivery schedule can leave a business needing more room now—without necessarily needing another permanent building.

That creates an awkward question. How much should you invest in solving a space problem that may only last a few months?

GoodMFG® modular structures offer another option. Use individual units for storage or office space or combine compatible structures into larger configurations. If your needs change later, the units can potentially be relocated, reconfigured, linked, or stacked in a different arrangement.

Short-Term Space for Rapid Growth

Growth creates good problems.

Unfortunately, they’re still problems.

A seasonal sales surge or unexpected increase in orders can put pressure on warehouse space, packing areas, inventory storage, and administrative work areas long before a business is ready to lease or construct additional permanent square footage.

A modular structure can give you dedicated space on or near your existing operation without requiring you to build an entire conventional room or building on-site.

GoodMFG® storage structures are available in both 13-foot and 19-foot footprints, with standard- and high-cube-height options. Current storage models range from approximately 629 cubic feet in the GM13ST to 1,075 cubic feet in the GM19HQ.

That makes them useful for needs such as:

  • Temporary inventory overflow
  • Supplies & packaging materials
  • Equipment or tool storage
  • Seasonal stock
  • Overflow storage for supply chain changes

Temporary Space During Renovations & Relocations

Renovating an office, warehouse, shop, or production facility creates an immediate logistics problem:

Where does everything go while the normal space is unavailable?

Inventory still needs somewhere to live. Supervisors still need desks. Tools and supplies still need to remain accessible. Employees may still need a functional workspace while part of the building is under construction.

GoodMFG® modular structures can provide temporary storage or office space during that transition.

For office needs, the current GM13HD-S provides room for a single workstation, while the larger GM19HD-S provides space for two workstations. Both include interior lighting and electrical outlets, and GoodMFG® offers additional modular options including HVAC, plumbing, workstations, cabinetry, counters, restrooms, and kitchenettes depending on the configuration.

Because these are self-contained structures, they may reduce the amount of temporary construction required inside the building you’re already renovating.

Then, when the renovation is complete, the structure does not necessarily become useless.

A compatible modular unit can potentially be relocated, repurposed, linked to additional structures, or incorporated into another approved configuration as the business changes. This is one of the biggest advantages of solving a temporary problem with something designed to remain useful after the immediate issue gets resolved.

How Long Does it take to Add Modular Space?

A modular structure arrives with much of its construction already completed.

Some basic configurations can be assembled in a matter of hours on a prepared site. More complicated layouts can take longer depending on the number of structures, site preparation, utilities, delivery, customization, and approval requirements.

Planning a Short-Term Modular Space

Temporary needs still deserve good planning.

Before you choose structures, think about what needs to happen inside of them.

  • What will you be storing or doing in the space?
  • How much usable room do you actually need?
  • Will people be expected to work in the space on a daily basis?
  • Do we need power? AC? Shelves? Counters? Built-in workstations?
  • How long will the unit remain in this location?
  • Can we reuse it somewhere else after?
  • Where will it be placed?
  • Is the site level, stable, and accessible for delivery?
  • Will we need permits, anchoring, utility connections, or other approvals?

You should also ask yourself whether renting is a better option for your short term space problems. We love it when you want to give our modular structures a forever home, but sometimes the need just doesn’t justify long-term ownership.

FAQ

Are GoodMFG®’s modular structures only for short-term use?

No.

They can solve temporary space problems, but they are designed as reusable structures rather than as disposable temporary shelteres.

Compatible units can be linked, stacked, reconfigured, or relocated in suitable configurations, allowing the same structures to serve different needs over time.

Can I relocate a modular structure after I no longer need it at the original location?

Yes, with the proper lifting and transportation equipment.

Do Good Modular Structures by GoodMFG® require permits?

It depends. Check your local laws and ordinances. The location, intended use, configuration, utilities, and installation can all matter.

Key Takeaways

Here’s the TL;DR when it comes to using Good products to solve short term space problems.

  • Temporary space problems don’t require permanent construction. Modular storage or office space can provide additional capacity without building an entire structure on-site.
  • Plan around the actual use. Inventory storage, office work, and employee facilities all create different requirements.
  • Basic set-up can be fast. Some of our structures come pre-built. Some can be assembled in hours on a prepared site. Some need a little more time.
  • The space can remain useful when the original problem disappears. As needs change, Good Modular Structures may be relocated, linked, stacked, or reconfigured as needs change.

Ready to Solve Your Short-Term Space Problem?

The hardest part of a short-term space problem is often deciding how much infrastructure to commit to solving it.

Too little space and you’re still fighting the original problem.

Too much permanent construction and you may be paying for square footage long after the temporary need has disappeared.
