Concrete grinders might not seem like much of a hauling challenge at first. After all, they only weigh between 400 and 1,200 pounds. But of course, moving concrete grinders comes with its own unique set of challenges and hassles.
And, unfortunately, if you’re still using the high angle ramps of a traditional trailer, then you’re only one slip away from a bent drive shaft and a week of downtime.

Most people who are moving concrete grinders need to haul more than the machine itself. There’s also the whole support system attached to it, from 480V three-phase power generators to heavy-gauge power cords, to the high-CFM dust extractor that is usually nearly as large and as heavy as the grinder itself.
You need to consider more than capacity, though. You need to consider security, too. Concrete grinders are high-theft items.

How Ground-Level Loading Protects Concrete Grinders
Traditional ramps are the enemy of concrete grinders. Grinding heads sit just an inch or two off the ground. That means a standard angle ramp creates a peak at the top that the grinder will tend to bottom out on. That can damage the expensive gear system or snap the drive belt.
What if you could eliminate the break-over angle entirely?

A tilt trailer and a drop deck may offer similar functionality in some cases. But moving concrete grinders isn’t one of them, because the machines are heavy, low-clearance, and top-heavy. The difference between a tilt and a drop can be massive.
- A tilt trailer creates a peak or an apex where the tilted bed meets the level part of the trailer. Because concrete grinders have such low clearance, they often high center at that peak. The operator gets the front wheels on, but the grinding head “bottoms out” on the metal edge.
- Tilt trailers create a steep incline. Loading a 1,000-pound machine on an incline is inherently risky. If the deck is wet, dusty with silica, or icy, the grinder can use traction and roll backwards or sideways. Gravity works against you the whole time.
- As the machine moves up the incline and the trailer bed tips back to level, there will be a moment of weight transfer. A jolt when a gravity-tilt bed snaps back to the horizontal position. It can tip over a tall vacuum and cause a grinder to violently shift.
- Concrete crews normally move their gear in a train of vacuum, to hose, to grinder. You can usually load only one thing at a time on a tilt. You drive the grinder up, wait for the bed to level, and roll the whole train onto the trailer in one go. Because the deck is stable and flat, you can maximize every square inch of space.
Tilt trailers can make some sense in some scenarios. If you’re loading in a muddy field, for example, a tilt trailer’s higher clearance can be an advantage. But concrete guys are almost always on pavement or slabs.
